Membership
What is a member of OSL? Who gets to be a member? Membership at OSL is different from other memberships you might have. You might be a member of a gym or a country club or some other organization. Usually, these memberships get you something: you give something, like a membership fee, and you get access to things in return. In a church, membership is something different. There is no membership fee at Our Savior’s and, for most things, you have the same access as a non-member that you do as a member. Coming to worship? Anyone can come! Need to have your child baptized? Membership not required. Funeral? Again, no membership required. At OSL, all are invited to experience the fullness of the community and membership is never checked at the door, except when it comes to the decision-making processes of the church.
What, then, is the point to membership? At OSL, membership is entering into a committed relationship. Membership is the individual saying to the church – Hey! I am a part of who you are! And membership is the church saying to the individual – Hey! You are a part of who we are! Membership is a commitment on the part of the individual and the whole community to be the body of Christ together. It is hard to be the body of Christ together if we do not know one another. Membership makes us aware of each other and it makes us accountable to one another.
As members, we then live together as the body of Christ, using our individual resources of time, talents, and finances as we are able for the greater mission we share as God’s people united in Christ.
Becoming a member of OSL includes participating in a class and being received publicly in worship. Membership classes usually take place in the fall and spring. Contact Martha Rossing or Pastor Heidi Binstock for more information on these classes.
